Term 2 Goals

Posted on April 26th, 2007 in Uncategorized by gareth7

I am going to work on editing my writing, I will do this by making sure I read my work again and proof read it before I hand it in.

I would like to work more independently in maths so I can focus on my task, I will do this by not talking to people during maths time.

One thing I want to work on this term is working co-operatively in groups or pairs, I will do this by listneing to my peers.

I would like to improve my reading habits for this term, I will do this by making sure that I read for fifteen minuts every day.

This term I want to work on my inquiry skills, I will do this by ensuring that I stay on task when I am using the internet for searches.

Santiago Munez grew up in the tough streets in Mexico. The one luxury he had was his most prized possession: his football. All he did as a child was play football in the poor streets of Mexico. But when Santiago was eleven his father paid to take Santiago and his younger brother and his grandmother to Los Angeles.

Life was supposed to be better now. Santiago and his family owned a small gardening business and his father was saving money to buy a truck, But Santiago resented his father for not supporting his love for playing football. Santiago was the star player in hid local team, one day he turned up late for his game and his team were losing one nil. Santiago quickly ran onto the field and the entire game changed. By the end of the game his team had won 4-2.

Little did Santiago know there was an English scout watching his game and he promised Santiago a trial for New Castle United if he could get himself to England. Santiago got a job at a local Chinese restaurant as a cleaning boy. After a few weeks Santiago had saved enough to fly to England. But his father had other ideas, he spent Santiago’s money on a new truck for his family business. But Santiago’s grandmother gave him a flight ticket by selling some of her things and Santiago flew to England to start his Football Career…..

I thought this book was a very good read. I enjoyed this book so much because it was about sport. The author described the characters in the book very well and made it clear what they were thinking/feeling.

Camp Recount:Rock Climbing

Posted on April 3rd, 2007 in Uncategorized by gareth7

My heart was pounding against my chest, it felt like it was going to spring from my body as the instructor tightly attached the rope to my harness. My legs Froze as he told me it was now safe go up. Slowly I started the climb, my arms felt stiff as I grabbed the first rock and put my legs up to climb. I franticly started grabbing at rocks trying to find a way up of what seemed like a mountain. Sweat was running down my face as I struggled to go on. About half way up I lost my grip of the rock and all of a sudden I slipped and slashed my leg. I was looking straight down and the height was overwhelming, all the worst situations were going through my head: what if the rope broke? What if I fell? I took a moment to catch my breath then I turned back to have another go but it was too much. I signalled to go back down.

Little did I know this was the hardest part of the experience. Logan (The instructor) asked me to lean right back and put all of my weight on the rope. Desperate to get down I recited the phrase “trust the rope trust the rope” over and over in my head. Then with a deep breath I leaned back and pushed off the rock but when I came back to the rock my leg hit into a piece sticking out from the cliff which sent a shudder through my bones. The harness was giving me a very painful weggie which didn’t help. The Instructor was trying to get me to come down but my brain kept telling me not to lean back. After two minutes of extreme struggle I was still dangling there against the rock. My mind went into a state of panic…then to my relief another instructor came over to help and I scrambled back to safety on the ground.
