Te Awamutu, New Zealand….its a quiet farming district placed in the centre of the north island next to the small city of
Hamilton. Although a lot of Te Awamutu is made up of farms it has many attributes that make it unique and special to all the people who live there. It is a very friendly environment full of sporting clubs and activities, rugby is one of the main sports in our district but people play other sports like: football, hockey and netball. The Waikato rugby team has many loyal supporters in Te Awamutu and are a very competitive side that compete in the domestic competition and the air
New Zealand cup. Te Awamutu has given itself the name of: The rose town of
New Zealand, this is because Te Awamutu has a large park called the war memorial park and it is full with roses. A few more of the activities in Te Awamutu include: The ASB events centre, the movie theatre, local shops and a few local sports parks. Te Awamutu is a great place to live even though the weather can be a bit unpredictable, but the bad weather doesn’t stop the locals from having a good time. Another good thing about Te Awamutu is that it has many great schools such as the one that I attend which is called: Te Awamutu Intermediate.

My Grandad:

Posted on October 18th, 2007 in Uncategorized by gareth7

My Grandad likes to sit in an old dusty rocking chair that squeaks every time it rocks, his feet will always be rested on a small wooden stool that has hasn’t been cleaned in years. His house is filled with old newspapers and half-done crosswords that he has not bothered to put in the rubbish. The living room of his house is full of clutter, old videos and books that he calls classics. Whenever I visit my grandad there will always be biscuits, tea and cakes to enjoy. My grandad spoils me with teats and gifts and he will take me to all the places I want to go. He wears boring clothes that would probably be labelled as old fashioned. I will always see an old green hat sitting on the top of his head to hide his wrinkles and he is always wearing long bare shirts to cover his worn arms. He has leather shoes that have been harshly shined and he wears long grey pants that are held up by a worn brown belt. My grandad has a kind personality, he will always have a smile on his face and he will always share some of the great stories that he has collected in his life. Whenever there is something wrong my grandad will know how to fix it and he will give me good advice. My grandad is a person that is respected by everyone he knows.

Grandparents:

A grandparent’s wrinkles do not show age, but instead they represent a long and eventful life. No matter what, you will always see a broad smile on their tired old faces. Grandparents will always have exciting and funny stories to tell, they will spoil their children and grandchildren with gifts and treats. Their houses will be filled with clutter and treasures that they have collected over the years and they keep these things to remind themselves of good memories. When you visit a grandparent they will be extremely happy to see you and there will always be hot drinks and biscuits to enjoy. A grandparent knows exactly what is wrong with you and how to help you; they will talk to you and understand you. A grandparent is someone who will always give you good advice and they are people that you look up to.

Term Four Goals:

Posted on October 10th, 2007 in Uncategorized by gareth7

My first goal for this term is to participate in social dance enthusiastically and to listen to dance instructions thoughtfully.

My second goal for term four is to stay on task during maths work and not to distract others that are working around me.

Another one of my goals is to write blog posts on my blog more frequently so I can be a more active I.C.T learner.

My last goal is to keep my tote tray clean so I can easily access my books etc.

Which is more lasting, lost or found?

Lost is more lasting because you remember the things you have lost, like if someone close to you died you would remember that your whole life and if you found something you would only remember it for a moment.

Cheetah Report

Posted on September 2nd, 2007 in Uncategorized by gareth7

Cheetahs are a special breed of unique cats that are becoming endangered and primarily live in African and Russian areas, cheetahs are rarely found in Iran but small numbers live there. Cheetahs do not like to live in captivity and extremely hate crowds. Cheetahs are an endangered species because humans in African areas hunt them and skin them to sell there furs at a very high price on a African black market. The word “cheetah” comes from a Hindi word which means covered in spots.  Cheetahs are athletic slender animals that have very strong thin legs designed to reach huge speeds in seconds. Their paws posses semi retractable blunt claws that improve traction when running at extreme speeds. There coat is made up of short coarse hair and is usually a light tanned colour that has scattered black spots all over it. They have a small head with high set eyes that improve vision when looking for prey. Cheetahs are fairly small animals and can grow up to 152cm long but can be as small as 105cm long; an average cheetah has a tail length of 87 cm and a weight of 31-64kg.

Cheetahs thrive in vast expanses of land and live in dry hot conditions, 95% of all cheetahs live on commercial farm lands. Cheetah can be found in a variety of places such as grasslands, savannahs, dense vegetation and mountain terrain.

Cheetahs usually feed on small hoofed animals and can last up to four days without finding a meal. Their common diet consists of small Antelope, young of large Antelope, warthogs, springhare and large game birds. When cheetahs can’t find water they feed on melons as a water substitute.

Cheetahs usually reach sexual maturity at the age of 20-23 months, the cheetahs gestation period last around 95 days and when the cubs are born they are about 30cm long and weigh around 300 grams. There can be up to 5 cubs in one litter but often 75%of the cubs are killed before they reach the age of three months old.

The majority of cheetahs hunt alone but sometimes siblings can form a coalition and hunt in groups, cheetahs are more likely to survive this way. During the mating season there are vicious fights between males; females also avoid other female cheetahs. Cheetahs use speeds of up to 110km an hour to hunt and use fatal neck bites to take down there prey. On average cheetah cover 7-8m with each stride.

Though cheetahs are great animals they are still endangered and are at risk from poachers and people who make them live in captivity. It is estimated that there are 12000-15000 cheetahs still left in the world, many countries are taking action about this such as U.S.A who having been helping save the cheetah.

Which is more secure, a key or a lock?

Posted on September 2nd, 2007 in Uncategorized by gareth7

In my opinion, a key is more secure because locks trap you in places you might not want to be and keys can open doors to new and exciting places that may be better than before.

What is more secure to you, a key or a lock?

Book Reveiw Task 2: No Safe Harbour

Author: David Hill

Stuart and his annoying twin sister Sandra are coming home to Wellington after a boring funeral. They are traveling on the ferry and Stuart knows that he will enjoy this trip because he is an excellent sailor, but his sister Sandra is a bad sailor and gets terrible sea sickness. The trip should have been a good one, but it is the year of 1968 and the ship is called the Wahine . As tragic events unfold Stuart and Sandra battle to stay alive, this creates many acts of heroism and fear. This story would have been a lot better if it didn’t jump straight into the plot, as when it got to the actual event it was dragged out a lot. I enjoyed this book and I thought the characters emotions were showed very well and I could relate to what some of the feelings were as I get terrible sea sickness and this was described very realistically. When the ship sank the descriptions of the events made me feel that I was really there and I could sense the fear in the characters. The way that the author wrote the story from a young teenagers point of view really made the book better because I could relate to the language the characters used. I would really recommended this book to ages 12-14 because I enjoyed it thoroughly and you don’t have to be interested in any particular kind of book.
